California/Sacramento Hall of Fame

Post by Ted » Mon Nov 09, 2015 11:06 am

Opened in 2023, the California Crusaders Hall of Fame is dedicated to honoring those individuals whose excellence on the playing field, in the front office, or as part of the greater Crusaders community have made a lasting positive impact on both the team and the community.

Batters

Billy Wilson
Catcher 1984-1998 (Lifer) Inducted 2023 (Inaugural)
Silk Award: 1990, 1991, 1994
Hall of Fame: 2000
All Star: 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994
Brewster Career Leaderboard Top 10: SLG 6th, HR 5th
Crusaders Stats (Rank in parentheses)
.260/.334/.563(1) .897 OPS(1)
2208 games(1) 2121 hits(2) 4588 total bases(1) 468 doubles(1) 53 triples(2) 631 HR(1) 1720 RBI(1) 86 Steals(10)
881 BB(2) 1844 SO(1) 68.8 WAR(1)
Wilson is simply the greatest Crusader to ever play. He was recently recognized as the best catcher of the first 50 years of the MBWBA, and it's not close. He is the only player to hit 50 home runs five times. For the first third of his career, Wilson was mired on mediocre teams, but held down the middle of the lineup for 3 teams in the late 80's and early 90's that went to the playoffs, making one championship series and losing. His 631 homeruns gave him the all time lead until Morris Pennebaker passed him in 2005 (incidentally as a member of the California Crusaders). In 1987, his most prolific season .294/.382/.695 with 38 doubles, 63 homers, 151 driven in and 9.5 WAR, setting many team records in the process. He holds the Crusaders single season reacords for SLG(.695), OPS(1.078), WAR(9.5), runs(128), total bases(404), home runs(63), and RBI(158).

Jon McNecirty
Third Baseman 1973-1986 ('87 in Greenville), Inducted 2024
Hall of Fame: 1996
All Star: 1974, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981
Crusaders Stats (Rank in parentheses)
.291 (9)/.335/.470 (7th)
2153 Games(2) 2377 Hits(1) 1136 Runs(1) 3841 Total Bases(2) 1673 Singles(1) 302 Doubles(2) 44 Triples(3) 358 HR(3) 1261 RBI(2) 93 Steals(9) 521 BB(4) 43.1 WAR(3)
McNecirty was California's first great hitting star, and is the second greatest power hitter in franchise history after Billy Wilson. He anchored the offense of the Crusader teams that finished first or second in the division in nine of the teams first ten years. He played in three championship series, winning one in 1979. Jon remained productive until his retirement at 39 years, hitting 95 of his career 377 home runs after age 35.

Joe "Secret" Weapon
Third Baseman 1985-1997 ('97 LV, '98 BIR) Inducted 2025
All Star: 1989, 1990
Career Leaderboards: .3885 OBP (42nd) 1141 BB (26)
Crusaders Stats (Rank in parentheses)
.287/.393(1)/.378 .771 OPS
1725 Games(3) 1798 hits(3) 1003 Runs(3) 1421 Singles(2) 244 Doubles(6) 66 Triples(1) 64 HR 2363 TB(6) 591 RBI(8) 379 Steals(1) 262 CS(1) 1065 BB(1) 1025 SO(8) 53.1 WAR(2)
Joe Weapon was a scrappy fan favorite in California for the better part of twelve seasons. He is the best on base man in team history, as well as the leading base stealer. More of a slap it and run guy, Joe never had much power. His tenure with the Crusaders wasn't the best run in team history, outside of a few playoff appearances in the late 80's/early 90's, but the hustling third baseman always gave the fans someone to cheer for.

Pitchers
Image
Narciso Jarilla
Starting Pitcher 1973-1981 Inducted 2023 (Inaugural)
All Star: 1980
Crusaders Stats (Rank in parentheses)
121(4)-95(6) 3.38 ERA 280 starts(6) 29 CG(9) 1844.1 IP(5) 2117 K(2) 479 BB 4.4 K/BB(6) 48.0 WAR(3)
The Costa Rican hurler anchored the Crusaders rotation from the inauguration of the league until 1981. Twenty-eight at league inception, Jarilla defied father time, maintaining his ability to be a top of the rotation starter until the age of 35 in 1980. His tenure, he went 121 and 95, victimized by mediocre to middling good teams until the twilight of his career. He still helped the team to the plaoffs four times, playing for a championship twice, winning one. He didn't ever win a pitcher of the year award, as they almost all went to the guy the award is named after back in those days. Jarilla was know for being a durable starter who went deep into games, making 34 or more starts in 7 of his 9 Crusader seasons, topping the 240 IP mark 4 times. His 10.3 K/9 inning mark is second in team history, and he struck out more than 250 batters 5 times. It's easy to imagine 200+ wins and 3500+ strikeouts for this incredible pitcher, if he had joined the league at an earlier age.

Joaquin Contraveras
Starting Pitcher 1973-1978 ('79 Calgary), Inducted 2024
All Star: 1977
Crusaders Stats (Rank in parentheses)
80-79 3.52 ERA 195 Starts 10 Shutouts(5t) 1351.1 IP 1505 K(7) 515 BB(5) 10.0 K/9(3) 40.5 WAR(4)
Contraveras was a contemporary of fellow Crusader hall member, Narciso Jarilla. Like Jarilla, he started his career at age thirty, but still pitched effectively for the back end of his career. He routinely topped 230 innings and average 250+ k's per year. He and Jarilla are one of the best strikeout tandems the league has ever seen. He won a championships with the team in 1979.

Image
Felix "Hurricane" Pan
Starting Pitcher 1988-1995 ('95-97 AUS, '98 LV, '99 HAW) Inducted 2025
All Star: 1990
Crusaders Stats (Rank in parentheses)
104(7)-64 3.34 ERA 239 GS(7) 1597.2 IP(9) 1566 K(6) 470 BB(9) 8.8 K/9(7) 1.13 WHIP(9) 34.9 WAR(5)
Felix "Hurricane" Pan was a mainstay of the Crusader rotation during the late 1980's into the mid '90s. He played on three playoff tams, reaching the championship round along with Billy Wilson and Joe Weapon, but lost. He remains one of the most efficient pitchers in team history, and would be higher on the team leaderboards if he had played longer with the club.

Gabriel Campos
Starting Pitcher 2012-2021 ('22-23,26 LOU, '23-26 ATC) Inducted 2032
Nebraska Award: 2020
All Star: 2014, 2016, 018, 2020
Hall of Fame: 2028
Brewster Career Leaderboard: 211 Wins (29th), 124 Complete Games (2nd), 33 Shutouts (3rd), 1.2 BB/9 (12th)
Crusaders Stats (Rank in parentheses)
150(2)-117(3) 3.15 ERA (7) 314 GS(4) 93 CG(1) 27 ShO(1) 2371.1 IP(2) 1887 K(3) 1.3 BB/9(4) 5.5 K/BB (3) 1.10 WHIP(7) 63.4 WAR(2)
At the time he left the Crusaders, Gabriel Campos lead the club in most traditional pitching categories. He anchored the outstanding rotations that lead the Crusaders to five straight 90 win seasons, four division titles and four playoff appearances from 2012 to 2016. When the team floundered for the next half decade, he remained a lone bright spot. Highly regarded by his peers as a leader, he is one of the few players elected team captain in Crusaders history. California has always been a franchise of pitchers, and Campos was the face of a decade. He was integral in passing the torch onto the next generation of Crusaders pitching, particularly in the tutelage of one Ricardo Diaz. Campos retired after the 2026 season, and was elected to the Brewster Hall of Fame in 2028.

Damon Lombardi
Relief Pitcher 1973-1981,85 ('82-85 LB) Inducted 2032
Reliever of the Year: 1980
All Star: 1973,1975,1979,1980,1981
Brewster Career Leaderboard: ERA 3.03 (26th), 426 saves (15th)
49-46 2.56 ERA (1) 607 G(3) 342 Saves(1) 623.1 IP 657 K 9.5 K/9 (6) 5.5 K/BB (3) 1.05 WHIP(4) 11.9 WAR(2)
Damon Lombardi opened his career with the franchise in 1973, and spent the next nine seasons finishing games for the ballclub. He still holds the team records for saves despite fifty seasons passing since his run with the team ended. He may be the best reliever to play for the club. His teams made the Landis twice (1976,1979) winning the second time. He was the reliever of the year in 1980.

Ricardo Diaz
Starting Pitcher 2019-2038
Champion: 2024, 2035
Brewster HoF: Inducted 2040
Franchise HoF: Inducted 2055
Winner Steve Nebraska Pitcher of the Year: 2022, 2023, 2025, 2027
All Star: 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, 2030, 2033
Brewster Career Leaderboard: 243 Wins (13): 4,056 K (2nd): 567 GS (8): 3,840 (8)
243-170: 3.18 ERA (1): 580 G: 3,840 IP: 4,056 K: 92.9 WAR
Ricardo Diaz hit upon the California landscape in 2019, took the population by the throat and did not let go until twenty seasons, four Nebraska’s and two championships later—that last championship included a Game-One start that was the thing that legends are made of. Discounting Steve Nebraska himself, there’s a reasonable argument to be made that Dias is the single greatest pitcher to ever stand on a Brewster mound. Simply click on that link above and bask in the moment. His induction into the franchise Hall of Fame has been delayed too long.

Yeah, it's a bit overwhelming with 50 years of history, but thanks to some of Rect's hard work, and OOTP having good team records, it's a lot of fun.

It really is a lot of fun. I like the historical stuff because it helps to educate the GMs who weren't around in the early years, which is a great majority.
