As it turns out, the Mad Popes had one of the biggest failures by a team favored to go deep into the playoffs. Finishing at exactly .500 and two brutal slumps at the worst possible time means that the Mad Popes are a team facing the cold reality that it is the end of an era. The Sacramento Bee included a shot of the Mad Popes exiting the dugout for the last time this year with the headline "Past Their Prime?". Ultimately the decisions that the new front office made to stick with what was thought to be a winning formula and focus on enhancing the pitching instead of the hitting is a fair question, and the critics who thought that choosing Heuring instead of bringing back someone who was a winner has to be questioned.
Ultimately hindsight is 20/20 and to be fair teams like Hawaii and Bikini should be given some credit as well. But ultimately 2063 is going to go down as a wasted year of Lou Bayou and with an aging pitching staff, there is going to be some tough decisions. But at the end of the day it is understandable that Heuring wanted to keep things largely the same and adding around the edges. Ultimately the challenge for him is to make this team his own and don't be afraid to do what is done. Look at what is going on in NYC.
