Camacho Announces Major Acquisition
June 23, 2055
With General Manager Ron Collins sidelined with a headache and something that might be flu-like symptoms, Carlos Camacho—the Mad Pope assistant GM—took to the podium, ran his fingers over his full brush of a mustache, and announced a deal that sends three players to the Atlantic City franchise in return for beleaguered starting pitcher Félix Vidaca.
“It was obvious we needed another pitcher,” Camacho said when asked about the basis for acquiring the 29-year-old hurler who has spent most of his career in Portland. With a 77-60 record, and a career 4.27 ERA, he’s been an effective hurler but one who’s expectations seem always just a touch out of reach. “Our team may be leading the league in ERA, but we’re only second best in runs allowed. Second best is not good enough for our fans.”
Fresh-faced background reporter Max Offen Sichtlich rose to ask what role Vidaca would fill, noting that the team already employs five solid starters. “That seems odd,” Offen Sichlich said. “Will we see a six-man rotation?”
Camacho appeared to do a brief double-take. “Don’t worry, youngster. There is nothing weird or in any way underhanded or nefarious about our desire to grab Félix. It’s just a good baseball move. And as far as the usage question, Ron and I keep a pretty off-hands approach to these things. We’ll let the baseball people figure that out.
Offen Sichlich then began to raise a question pertaining to rumors that Vidaca’s younger sister recently moved to Sacramento, and has been affiliated with a local chapter of a not-so-secret society of thugs and team hanger-ons who call themselves The Most Sublime Cult of the Sublime Camacho, but the Sacramento GM apologized for needing to run. “I’m late for a very important meeting with some of our top scientist,” he said. “Thanks for your time.”
For completeness sake, the club sent current relief pitcher Tak-keung Liao, and AAA players Jose Bray and Abbad bin Rashad to the Gamblers. All three could see time on the Atlantic City roster. Bray and bin Rashad appeared to be blocked for further progression in the Sacramento organization, and there were rumored to have been some dust-ups between Liao and the new Sacramento leadership regarding the use of options and other such stuff.
