Cali's Players of the Month July 2002

Post by bschr682 » Mon Nov 21, 2011 12:51 am

Another month, and another winning record for the Crusader's. For the month of July, California went 16-10. The fellas listed below were big contributors to the success this month.

Starter of the Month:
Michael Shellenbarger
In 6 games started he was 3-1 with a 2.15 ERA in 46 IP. He notched 40 K's to go against 11 walks. His WHIP was a great .98. Shelly has been the ace of the staff since aquired from Hawaii in July of 2000 and he showed it all month long.

Reliever of the Month:
Scott Klingenbeck
In 8 games he was 1-0 with 0 Saves and a 0.00 ERA. He notched 10 K's to go against just 2 walks. His WHIP was an outrageous .68. Scott has been a solid member of the California bullpen since being claimed off waivers in October of '97. He is in the midst of another solid season but it is not certain if there will be another contract extension. The Crusader's have plenty of solid arm's in te pen but some of them are getting older. At 31, Klingenbeck may be let go to get some younger guys up to the big leagues.

Infielder of the Month:
Jacinto Merino Jr
He appeared in 26 games hitting .333/.391/.545/.936 in 99 AB's. He blasted 5 HR to power his way to a total of 18 RBI. Merino has had a bit of a power outage this season but he has still been very productive at the plate.

Outfielder of the Month:
Sam Jones
He appeared in 26 games hitting .294/.313/.413/.725 in 109 AB's. He blasted 1 HR to power his way to a total of 10 RBI. Sam has been a rather unheralded member of the Crusaders since '99. With the top 2 prospects in the Crusader's minor league system being left fielders it is highly unlikely that Jones will continue to have his permanent spot in the outfield. Whether he is moved to a reserve role or is just not resigned is uncertain at this point in the season.

The Crusader's sent the following 3 players to this season's All-Star game: RF Sadaharu Oh Jr, Cl McKinley Washington and set-up man Kurt Hass.
