49.08 - Nine Questions: #2 “Is Rex Foster Simply Too Soft?”

Everything about Rex Foster says “New York.” Which makes sense, because that’s where he’s from. He’s brash with his talk and he’s got that jovial, but cutting-edge sense of one-upsmanship humor that seems grounded in the cracked asphalt of Times Square, but can also come off as self-deprecating in the way that only a guy from the Big Apple can pull off. The off season sees him hit the clubs in NYC. His game is a lot like that, too. The guy hits the ball often, and he hits it hard, which is why his career OPS+ is an eye-shattering 157.

To say he’s been a fan favorite around the Heartlandesque area code of Yellow Springs is to put it mildly. Ohioans love him.

That said, there are whispers coming around. Wonderings.

Is Rex Foster actually a bit of a baby? I mean. To get this you have to understand that life in the corn belt is about putting on the hard hat and getting to the tractor, you know? A person works for their living. Even if you’re hitting mostly right handed pitching, you show up for work and you do the job. That’s why the club is paying you those $85M bucks you signed up for. At issue, though, is that Foster seems to becoming one of those guys—you know what I mean—one of those guys who picks up a spasm one day, or some tendonitis the next. Knee inflammation, of a bit of a rib cage strain, and next thing you know he’s on the DL.

A hamstring strain in the Brewster series kept him out of the last game, for jus an example. And word came that he might have tweaked it again on one of those NYC dance floors he’s often seen hob-knobbing about in. They say he’ll be ready by spring training. But, yeah. Dude is 28, some fans are staring to say, and his medical records are growing longer than his dance card. He was hurt five times last year, for example. Five times. Four of them for not insubstantial impact.

So, yeah. Fans are beginning to wonder. I mean, they love the guy when he’s on the field, but is he going to come to work? Can he grin and bear it?

Is the guy going to earn the $73M he still has on that contract of his?

Plus bonuses?

The answer will go a long way toward saying how the YS9 season goes, and a longer way toward saying what Rex Foster’s legacy might be at the end of his career—however long that is.

Kate won’t like Rex if that’s the case.
