SHORTSTOP DEMANDS “BIG BOY MONEY”

November 11, 2046: YELLOW SPRINGS – Executives and fans of the Yellow Springs Nine alike have been waiting to hear from Diamond Glove shortstop Luis Pena regarding his view of the player option he held for 2047, an option that was worth $6.5M. Pena was coming off what was arguably the best year of his career—despite having lost several weeks to injury. The question about how he valued that balance of skill and risk was open for conversation.

Now they know.

“Luis is a premier player in this league, we think he should be paid that way” said Cash McCreedy, who is Pena’s representative. “It’s time for Yellow Springs to pony up some Big Boy Money.”

Big Boy Money, it seems, is defined as something in the range of $20M a season for multiple years.

It should be noted that some are also saying that Pena would like to play for a team that values the post season perhaps a bit more highly than the idea of winning a division title. At 27, Pena is considered at his peak, and with shortstops a position of differentiation across the league, one can see where he might have his picks of locations. Regardless, the idea of the team having room on their roster for another $20M player is fanciful at best.

“We would love to have Luis come back to paly in Ohio,” said GM Ron Collins. “But we certainly respect that every player gets to make their own choices.”
