YS9 Bullpen Shuts Down River Monsters

Oct 25, 2045: TWIN CITIES – “Yeah,” said Al Colbert as he wiped sweat from his brow after his three-inning performance shut down the River Monsters tonight, and served to escort the team into what is expected to be the (now) last Landis round of all time. “We heard what everyone was saying. It gave us a little boost, I’ll admit that.”

What he means is that the Yellow Springs Nine bullpen heard the buzz about Twin Cities bullpen aces Shawn Huber and Juan Cerda, and how much of the Cartwright series depended up on them.

It is, to be sure, true that Huber and Cerda had been forces in the huge run the River Monsters made in September and October. And the fact is that these are good pitchers. But it was without disrespect that the Nine staff gathered together before the series to discuss their reason for existence. “We all gave the pinky swear that we were just going to stick together,” Colbert said. “We told each other that we had to go get our press. So every time one of us took the hill, the other guy stood there to fist bump the next guy. It was our way of passing the baton, I suppose.”

The results speak for themselves.

Four games.
  • TWC bullpen, 10.66 innings, 10.13 ERA.
  • YS9 bullpen: 15.66 innings, 0.00 ERA
Talk about your shut-downs. Yes, the bulk of the effort fell to Colbert and rookie Derrick Cheney, but the rest of the staff had their moments. It was a group effort, and while Dong-po Thum was a worthy winner of the series MVP, one could be forgiven for voting for the bullpen as a whole.

“We don’t’ need an award,” Colbert said. “But I figure the guys would like a headline or two.”

The one thing that can be said for sure is that the club is going to get one more chance for those headlines.

You need more of Cheney in the Series to get it done.
