Ernesto Ramos On The Mend

March 30, 2045: Yellow Springs – While pundits and fans continue to laud the Yellow Springs franchise, most insiders are keeping their powder dry when it comes to making predictions for the team. A lot of that has to do with the biggest of big question—that being how starting pitcher Ernesto Ramos is going to deal with pitching after a long injury.

To recount, Ramos was shut down in August of last season with the notorious “shoulder inflammation.” The injury has kept Ramos off the field all spring, but team doctors are optimistic that the big right hander should be able to begin throwing in a week or two—news that will likely mean a stint in a minor league rehab before rejoining the team.

At age 30, Ramos’s future is in some peril. The club hopes he’s as solid as his past—his career record sits at 109-58, with a 4.12 ERA, much of it made during offensive-minded seasons. He won 20 games in 2040, and led the league in ERA that same season. His 109 victories puts him #7 on the franchise’s all-time list, behind pitching coach Alberto Sanchez’s 129. If that’s the version of Ernesto Ramos that returns, it will be worth the wait. No one is holding their breath right now. The bottom line is that the Nine’s rotation should be solid enough without Ramos, but the ability to slot him in at his old #2 position changes the entire dynamic of the staff.

Carlos Valle is the clear #1, and if Ramos is in there at the nest slot, that means manager Sam Brewington can slot Carlos Pineda in the #3 slot, and Dave Lee and Tomas Ramirez into the#4 and #5 slots as match-ups dictate. Right now, pundits seem to be discounting the question. Right now they all seem to be adding Ramos (and assuming both he and fellow shoulder inflammation survivor Carlos Pineda don’t get hurt again). Admittedly, doing that suddenly turns the rotation from looking good to looking better than good.

That’s the question on everyone’s mind as the league turns toward opening day, though: Which Ramos will show up, and when will that be?
