Reliever Approved for Action
August 11, 2044: Indianapolis – The Indianapolis Downforce sit a half a game out of their division lead as the calendar heads toward September. Today they got news that the club would be boosted by the addition of 24-year-old right-handed relief pitcher Armando Duarte, who has been sidelined with a very difficult elbow surgery since early in the season two years ago. Until that point, Duarte had been considered one of the stronger members of the bullpen, and had posted a solid 4.78 ERA in 37 innings of his debut season.
“It’s hard to make a big comeback from that kind of an injury,” said Access Baseball analyst Gayle Combs, “but it’s been clear that Duarte has been working as hard as the doctors will let him work. It will be interesting to see if he can add some value to the Nine in September--if nothing else maybe he can carry a few innings to keep other pitchers healthy.”
At question, of course, is—even if the hurler comes back at something close to full capability—whether there will be a place left for Duarte.
“I’m looking forward to get out on the mound,” Duarte said. “It doesn’t even matter where it is right now.”
