17th Win Takes POTM
July 31, 2044: Yellow Springs – Carlos Valle’s stuff was off just enough that he only lasted into the sixth inning tonight, but those 5+ looked pretty dominating to the Nashville Bluebirds. Valle struck out seven and walked only one batter while allowing two hits. A solo homer by Dong-po Thum and two-run double from Jesus Rodriguez provided Valle a three-run cushion, and resulted in the YS9 ace picking up his 17th victory on the season. Afterward, the Frick League completed the celebration by naming him the FL Pitcher of the Month of July.
Valle On A Run
“To be honest, he’s had better months this year,” manager Sam Brewington said. “It’s just that other guys have had moments where they did something more off-the charts. That’s the thing with Carlos, though, he’s a pro. Really steady and really good.”
The numbers bear Brewington out. For the season, Valle’s monthly ERA has been 1.80, 3.34, 2.43, and now 2.58. His 17-4 record stands atop the Frick League by a wide margin, all of which has combined to once again make Valle a member of the elite group of pitchers in the running for the vaunted Nebraska Award—a trophy he’s brought home two times to date. Of perhaps more interest to YS9 fans more inclined to such things is that the victory was Valle’s 162nd of his career, a number that puts him a cool ten wins behind Jose Chavez—a milestone that would make him the winningest pitcher in franchise history (he passed Lawrence Columbus LaLoosh earlier this season for the #2 spot.
“That’s all great for a sugar rush,” Valle said. “Right now, though, the main thing I want to do is hit the analytics room and take a look at Sacramento (the opponent for when he’s slated to start next).
The victory was tactically important because it left the Nine 77-32, 12.5 games up on the Bluebirds.
