Nine System Not Dead Yet

August 9, 2043: Indianapolis – Dave Lee—one of the league’s more anticipated prospects—spent a few weeks up in the bigs earlier this year but was returned to Indianapolis when his numbers suggested other options might be wiser.

A month and a half later, Lee’s no hitter in Death Valley says that maybe he’s ready this time. The 22-year-old lefty struck out eight Scorpions, and was only a walk and a 9th inning hit batsman away from perfection in a 115 pitch masterpiece.

Ignoring for the moment that the manager left Lee in the game for those extra pitches—something club insiders are said to be unhappy about—the fact is that Lee was literally unhittable. Given that the team has still scrambled a bit for both their fourth and fifth starters since Carlos Pineda went down with shoulder inflammation early in the season, the addition of another strong left hander would probably be as good as cold Gatorade on a parched August day.

Lee is 2-3, with a 3.51 ERA since his demotion.

HENSON KEEPS IMPRESSING

It’s fair to say that Fort Worth A-ball’s [urlhttps://statspl.us/brewster/reports/news/html/players/player_46853.html]Bobby Henson[/url] (20) is a bit lesser known that Dave Lee. He was selected quietly, in the 9th round, in the 2041 draft, and at times hasn’t even been the starter for his minor league teams. But baseball insiders around the team are starting to whisper that the kid might be one to watch. Those words were definitely true earlier this week when the kid from Urbana, Illinois dropped three long bombs on the visiting club from Portsmouth.

Henson was unproductive in his first season as a professional, but had a solid enough season last year (17 homers, 21 doubles, .310/.418/.572 at Cat Island) to put him on scouts’ radar screen. His move to A-ball has resulted in similar numbers, though he’s still splitting time with Derek Cummings, a guy with a bit higher profile.

“We push each other,” Cumming said about the competition. “Bobby just needs to keep doing what he’s doing.”

At present, the hope is that both of those players push each other to learn how to use the glove.

SYSTEM FALLING

Despite these notable performances, some in the BBA world have taken note that the team's overall system is not as strong as it has been in the past.

Our poor, destitute farm system...

Someone should throw us a bone here or there.
