Difficult Debut Stirs Dissatisfaction

June 2, 2043: Yellow Springs – Despite the Nine’s current hold on the Heartland division lead, youthful left-hander Dave Lee can be forgiven a bit of pre-game angst as his team prepares to host Long Beach in their series ending matchup. The 22 year old arrived with a lot of pomp for his circumstance, having been named the #8 prospect in the league prior to the season, and having posted a 2.09 ERA in his seven starts in AAA.

He was going to be a savior who walked in to take a recuperating Carlos Pineda’s slot in the rotation. Alas, truth sometimes gets in the way of story, and Lee’s Cinderella plot has been derailed by four starts of dubious merit. Yes, the bats have come to the rescue in the sense that the Nine have won all four of Lee’s starts, but his 7.66 ERA is all you really need to know to understand the kinds of games those have been.

The team is 4-0 with winds of 5-4, 11-8, 9-7, and 5-4. He’s expected to start tonight against the Surfers and understands that maybe this will be his last time out of the chute for a while.

“It’s not what I wanted, that’s for sure,” Lee said during tonight’s pre-game luncheon.

“We don’t have a big rush for him,” said pitching coach Alberto Sanchez. “He’s throwing well enough, but the home run ball is killing him. Transitions are tough, but he’s a solid pitcher. If he needs to go down for a few more rounds to get his feet under him, that’s fine.”
