Will Prized Prospect Be Called Up?
May 4, 2043: Yellow Springs – While the entirety of YS9 fandom spends time in mourning of Carlos Pineda’s inflamed shoulder, the rest of the world continues on at the pace of just around 24 hours per standard day. Which means the Nine are now left to deal with the aftermath, or, boiling it down to the obvious—how to fill Pineda’s slot in the rotation.
This, of course, leaves fans wanting to see him now.
The concern that sent him to AAA in the first place remains, however, and that problem is all about his general difficulty to get right handed batters out. That trait hasn’t raised it’s head in Indy (RHB are hitting only .264 off him), but it’s there in the minds of baseball people who watch the lefty throw.
Alternatives are somewhat limited, however. Some suggest more bullpen games might be in the offering, or perhaps moving a guy like Al Colbert into the rotation full time. But with young Josh Henson already doing extra-duty as a starter, wone wonders how much more pressure to put on a bullpen that has already been called on far to often to bail out a rotation that is struggling to hit on any cylinders, better yet one without Pineda as a main core. Another idea that’s been floated is the use of longtime journeyman Callum Maybury—who is known to be a team favorite. Despite having a lackluster sheen, Maybury is 4-1 with a 3.79 ERA and a reputation of simply making things work.
“Our baseball people are meeting on this later tonight,” said GM Ron Collins. “Until then, I’m probably better off not talking about it.”
