Beanball Attrition Continues
Foster Takes
Fastball to Head
That last victory came on the strength of two Donald Miller home runs, and on the day after the team learned that star outfielder Rex Foster suffered a bruised cheekbone after being hit by what was, once again, a flagrantly thrown fastball up and in.
“I admit I don’t really appreciate this team,” Foster said while holding an ice pack to his face after the game, but really every team in the league is throwing at us like that, so how can you blame just them?”
The injury puts Foster in the same situation with center fielder Abdeljilill Sediki, who is nursing a tender rib cage that does not seem to want to heal. Second baseman Roberto Viramontas was lost for the season in August as was reliever Armando Duarte.
“It’s hard to deal with injuries,” said manager Sam Brewington after the game. “But we’re going to have to just suck it up and move on. We’ve got players that can still win this thing if we stay focused.”
Perhaps.
Maybe.
Yeah, right?
Technically it’s true that the team could still rally the wagons and circle the gumption to make something happen, but when you dig the kind of hole this team just dug … well … if one is being objective you have to start looking at the option of playing in the Geoghegan Round rather than hoisting a division pennant.
Sad, yes.
But the writing is all the wall.
