Heartland Race Heats Up

Leads Revival
August 11, 2042: Yellow Springs – Downing the Kernels of Des Moines and the Hawks of Omaha twice each, the feisty boys from Yellow Springs have taken back two more of the eight and a half games they had found themselves down just a month ago, sitting now just 4.5 games from the Holy Land of Heartland leadership. Under the steady hand of Sam “the Bam” Brewington, the club has won 18 matches and lost only seven.

“We’re playing hard,” said Dong-po Thum through a translator after yesterday’s heart-wrenching 10th inning loss in a game that could have taken even a bigger chunk from the Slizzardly Loserville Slugs. “You can’t win them all, but you can try, and that’s what we’re doing.” Thum has recently reverted to using a translator again due to mounting pressure of the run and the burden of team leadership that has been shifting from the shoulders of veteran Lucas McNeill over toward him.

The team has a steep and lofty mountain still to climb, not the least of their worries being a September schedule that is played mostly outside of Ohio. That said, the two clubs play each other eight more times before the season ends—four times in each ballpark. With many of the league’s watchful eyes focused on the lesser questions of who might win the Johnson Atlantic, or which of the mess might slip in to qualify as the last three Wild Card slots, the chase for the vaunted Heartland Division crown is heating up right under noses and … uh … whatevers.

“It’s fun, Thum said. “This is why we like to play the game.”

CONTRACT RUMORS CIRCULATE

After the interview was completed, news filtered through the press room that the team and Thum were working toward a deal, though there was confusion as to just how big that deal might be. Most thought it likely the pair would sign a one-season extension to avoid the ugliness of an arbitration room argument, others suggesting Thum was willing to extend for three seasons—his two remaining arbitration years and one more.

Feel free to sit Joe Bradshaw for the series. I hear he's getting fatigued, so a three-day trip to the healing waters of French Lick might be a nice little perk for him.
