Social Media Frenzy The Sign of Things to Come?
July 8, 2042: Yellow Springs – Amid wild speculation that the end of Bill Inkster’s time with the Nine is coming due, a wave of speculation has torn through social media circles that suggest the team has reached out to current hitting coach Sam Brewington’s agent about taking the role.
Brewington, who played with the organization for most of his career and is a member of the franchise’s Hall of Fame, said simply “I have not had conversation with either Bill or the team about any role beyond that of helping the team get out of this slump we’re in.”
Fans seemed excited, however.
Inkster on the last year of his contract, and has been under considerable pressure. The front office has been supportive to date, but a series of recent outbursts that the usually easy-going manager has made in the presence of various members of the team and media have left the club without comment.
Brewington joined the organization in 2033, and worked his way up from A-ball to AA before being promoted to the Nine’s dugout in 2037—a span that has seen the club’s offense generally rank in the upper ranges of the league despite having few super-star quality hitters. He has been well thought of in baseball circles.
No word on who might fill Brewington’s slot, though speculation is that BBA Hall of Famer Emilio “Sunshine” Rodriguez, who is coaching in Indianapolis, is ready for a shot.
