Nine Star to Re-up?

Lucas McNeill made Yellow Springs fans hearts go pitter patter with a recent tweet in which he seems to suggest that he’s interested in playing the rest of his career with the Nine.

Rumors also suggest that this tweet came shortly after GM Ron Collins and YS9 owner Bo Jordan sat down with McNeill and his pop-star wife Mikki Manning to discuss options for the future.

“We’ve always made it known that we would like Lucas to be a 1-team superstar,” said Collins earlier this spring. “We’ve got a very young team, with lots of players coming up. But Lucas is a guy you don’t find very often, and we want to keep him in Yellow Springs if it’s at all possible.”

Some are suggesting that Jordan has made McNeill an offer to be part of the front office after his career is over.

McNeill has certainly had a bit of a wild ride when it comes to his contractual status. He was one of the first high-profile cases of service time manipulation, being held back during the team’s ill-fated 2027 season for long enough to avoid going super-2, then hurting himself while sliding. At the time, the move was controversial, and likely cost McNeill several millions of dollars during his arbitration years. Warming to Yellow Springs, however, he did sign a team-friendly extension in 2032.

2037, however, saw him stretch the team over the barrel, however, opting out of his last year after winning his second Silk Award, and joining a wave of Nine Free Agents asking for the world. In McNeill’s case, the team gave it to him in the form of a six season, $169m deal that included vesting options that the team let him play through—including the one that’s paying him $23m this year.

“I’ve gotten my cash,” McNeill said earlier in the off season. “And Mikki’s doing fine, too. I think we’ll be all right.”

Amid questions that he may be slowing down, McNeill opened the season hitting .375/.444/.438 with a double and two stolen bases.
