You’ll sometimes hear that there’s no such thing as a bad 1-season deal, and in this case there’s more to it than that. News today comes that the Yellow Springs Nine have come to agreement on a 1-season deal with 28-year-old outfielder Grant Lee. Word is that the contract will pay him $6.2M, with an achievable bonus that could pay him $2M more.

The one-time All-Star outfielder debuted with Nashville, but spent most of his career with San Fernando before being traded to Rockville late last year. He's produced a career .261/.333.438 line with 145 HR and 146 steals. He’s been waiting to sign a contract for several months. The team expects to use Grant as a platoon role against left-handed pitching, and a late inning defensive replacement—a similar role played by John Ginn in seasons past and one mirrored by fellow veteran Luis Costello. Insiders say that the fact he can still handle duties in center field was considered valuable. “I like having a backup in case Abdejillil [Sediki] gets nicked up,” manager Bill Inkster said of the deal. “Depth is a big deal in the league.”

Lee arrived at the team’s spring training site in Fool’s Gulch, Arizona late this evening and is expected to suit up tomorrow.

“I’m thrilled to join such a stable organization,” Lee said. “It’s been a long off-season. I’m looking forward to finally get on the field.”


FINCH NOW EXPENDIBLE?

The move means that 31-year-old Walter Finch, signed two weeks earlier to a minor league deal that becomes a big league contract within 30 days, could be expendable.

having run lee out in CF for many years he wont be great out there, but he also wont kill you. Interesting deal because that is basically the money he wanted for an extension, albeit for 6 years instead of just 1. He wont be the superstar he looked like he would be when he was drafted #3 overall (ahead of guys like puckett, zalapa, Mendoza, Gilliam and carpenter), but he can contributing piece on a championship level team.

He'll play RF and LF for me, mostly. Hitting only LHP.

I'm over-paying for that role, but it's a 1-season deal...which I wanted because I expect Brett Powers to be in that role in 2043.

I considered making an offer to Lee long and hard, but ultimately his CF defense wasn't good enough. But I was sorely tempted. Nice addition.

I learned that, for the one sim I didn't have a manager during the off-season, players won't have a conflict with your manager when you don't have one. Very strange.

I kept looking at one player and he refused to talk to me over Aicon. Dropped Aicon down, had to wait and hire a manager, and suddenly that player would talk to me. Hired a new manager and that player wouldn't talk again.

I went to bed one night thinking of firing California manager, Alberto Franco. While asleep, Ted showed up in my dreams threatening bodily injury if I did.
