If anyone not named Dong-po Thum is playing third base for the next three or more seasons, something has gone Simpsonly, Simpsonly wrong. I mean, that’s the thing, right? Yes, Blaine Tyler is a very nice little prospect here, but he’s not going to be putting up back-to-back (and hopefully to back) 7 WAR seasons anytime soon.
And that’s a good thing. I guess. I mean, we’ve still got another year with Alejandro Rodriguez at the backup spot, but, really, he should be playing in the bigs for someone, and we figure he’s got to go soon.
As noted in the second base discussion, the team sees Tyler as sliding over there pretty soon—and maybe, eventually coming back to play third if the team can’t keep Thum happy. This is a workable plan, but the next ring of defense is essentially unchanged from before, and that ring is “keep Stephenson and Moon playing and hope for a visit from the Development Fairy.” Maybe it will work. There are a couple others in the organization who, with a little magic dust sprinkled around, could come on, also.
But right now we’re not betting the ranch.
