9-News: 42.008 – Thum Wins Big in Arbitration
Players Skin Nine Twice in Three Tries
The Yellow Springs Nine front office lost the Arbitration series in three games, defeating relief pitcher Jose Sanchez (who was in the mix as a Super 2 candidate), but losing to a pair of third basemen in Alejandro Rodriguez and Dong-po Thum.
Sanchez, who spent much of the season on the disabled list with a chronic elbow strain, asked for $1.2m, but the arbitrator came to her senses and awarded him only $750K as suggested by the team. After hearing of the decision, Sanchez was somewhat miffed. “I’ve got a great slider,” he explained. “I don’t know why the team doesn’t start me, you know? I don’t do anything but get guys out.” Sanchez did make three starts for the Nine in his rookie season, but has primarily been utilized out of the bullpen otherwise.
Rodriguez was awarded $1.6m against the team’s suggestion of $1.15m. With the arrival of Thum, he has been relegated to the role of AAA injury insurance for the past few seasons—and it is widely understood that the team has been advertising him as available for trade.
“Alejandro likes Yellow Springs,” Rodriguez’s representative at Hot Corner Sports Representations said regarding the rumors of his client being on the trade block, “But he would like to play full time.”
The big winner, however, was Dong-po Thum, who won his second straight Zimmer and first Puckett Award for his exploits last season. Thum will make $8.1m in 2042, the largest arbitration award ever given a YS9 player. The team is known to be interested in making a long term commitment to their young superstar, but Thum seems uninterested in an arbitration buy-out, and league rules prevent deals longer than three seasons until the player’s 6th season.
With only three seasons under his belt, Thum sits atop the franchise’s all-time OBP list. His 160 runs scored last season was the most in franchise history by a large distance, as was his 233 hits. He’s led the league in triples twice. His 205 career steals is currently 8th on the Nine All-time list.

The fruit baskets Vinnie sent to the arbitrators may have had something to do with that Thum decision ...
