As most team insiders were expecting, buzz has risen around contract talks for newly acquired veteran outfielder Luis Costello.

“I’m really excited to be here,” Costello—who is eligible to be a free agent next year—said after hearing he’d been traded. “Yellow Springs is a top-flight organization with a real chance to go deep into the post season, and as a player, that’s what you’re looking for.”

Costello brings a solid, if not special, bat to the team, and is an accomplished defender who can handle any outfield role, something the team values as a sidecar to what is one of the younger and more talented pitching staffs in the league. With his time in Edmonton, Costello also brings to the clubhouse an essence of what it means to be on a Landis Winner. “He’s the exact kind of player we thought we needed to add for the post season,” said GM Ron Collins. “It’s important that our fans know we’re serious about making some waves throughout October.”

The Nine are considered one of the deeper teams in the league, but have made no great secret that they were interested in keeping Costello happy even while noting they wouldn’t be breaking the bank to keep him. That said, Costello’s representatives were said to be looking for a five-season deal somewhere in the range of $60M guaranteed that would run the 27-year-old up to his age 32 season. “We think the numbers are reasonable,” said Jerry “Show Me the” McQuan, who is one of the co-founders of the PutItToTheMan Collective.

The club is rumored to have an idea of the kinds of dollars they are willing to spend, a number they also consider “reasonable.”

The question, it seems, is whether there’s a Venn diagram match between those definitions.
