Ramos Takes Second Straight POTM

After he threw down a 5-1 record and a 1.55 ERA, YS9 starter Ernesto Ramos was awarded the Frick League Pitcher of the Month of April. He then turned around and went himself one better, posting 1.50 ERA and an undefeated 5-0 record in May. For this he was promptly named the Frick League’s Pitcher of the Month of May.

“I could get used to this,” Ramos said when informed of it.

His fiancée was a bit more pragmatic. “Oh, Lord no,” she quipped. “We’re going to have to get the doors widened in the place just to get his head through them.”

Big head or not, Ramos started the month off with a 7-inning shutdown of California. He did give up four runs to Long Beach, but his lumber-toting friends saved him—a debt he repaid by giving up only four runs total over his next four starts (only three of them earned), including tossing 8-innings of goose eggs at California only to have the bullpen give that game away. Along the way, he beat California, Long Beach, Chicago, Madison, and Hawaii.

“If there’s a hotter pitcher in the league right now, I haven’t see him,” said voice of the Nine Melissa Lester.

At 25, Ramos has been playing second fiddle to Carlos Valle for some time, but while Valle (6-1, 3.10) is putting up numbers that everyone expects, Ramos is literally blowing Frick League hitters away.

“It’s a long season,” Ramos said in a moment of reflection. “We’ve got a ways to go.”
