Camacho Called Up, Mendoza to Rehab Assignment

After hitting a cool .191, the club announced today that the were optioning RHB DH Miguel Fernandez back to AAA in favor of 22-year-old rookie Jose Camacho. Fernandez posted a solid .333/.356/.482 slash with the club last season, hitting a pair of homers and clubbing 11 doubles in only 114 AB, but he suffered a series of injuries, including a late-season concussion, and even his mother would have to admit he hasn’t really seemed the same since.

“Miguel is a fighter,” said manger Bill Inkster. “Everyone hopes he’ll make it back up here.”

In the meantime, Camacho is one of YS9’s more interesting prospects. His overall line since being promoted to AAA is only .225/.328/.431, with five homers in his 102 AB, but the team considers a him a lefty masher, a reputation borne out in his .320/.433/.600 slash against southpaws, albeit in only 25 AB. Last season, Camacho was considered the team’s #3 prospect in left field, behind both Ricardo Mendoza and that seasons’ #1 pick, and $14M bonus baby, Rex Foster. The main concern with Camacho is that his glove is borderline spastic, an issue that obviously won’t be an issue if he can stick as a DH. His work ethic hasn't been doubted, but at 22 he sometimes doesn't make the best choices. "There's always a box of donuts in his locker said one teammate."

That said, insiders suggest that 1B prospect Mark Haynes had been the first name on the list so replace Fernandez until back problems put him on the DL. We'll see what the future holds.

MENDOZA RETURNS

Speaking of rookie Ricardo Mendoza, his oblique appears to have been healed, and he has now been sent to AAA for what the club reports should be a very brief rehab assignment in order to tune up his swing. No word on who will be sent to Indianapolis when he’s ready. Original expectation was that one-time Gillstrom winner Andy McKinney would once again be returned to the Downforce, but he’s hit pretty well again since being recalled, and teammate Jose Machado (also a one-time Gillstrom winner) has sucked balls.

“These things work themselves out,” said GM Ron Collins at one of the team’s weekly fan luncheons. “We’ll make roster moves when we need to make roster moves.”

NOTES

- When Des Moines touched reliever Timofei “VODAK” Bakitski for two runs on May 15th it broke 24-inning scoreless streak. The 33-year-old Russian went out three days later and shut down Madison to start a new streak. He’s currently 3-1, with 5 saves and a 0.65 ERA.

- As, an opener lefty pitcher Edgardo Llauro has started three games and registered a 32.4 ERA. As a reliever, he’s throw 3.2 innings, and allowed only 2 hits while walking none.

Vodak on fire!!!

I think I'm going to do a year-end piece(s) and look back at how all the trades went for Portland. The Vodak trade I'm still willing to label a push at the moment only because I think Howeth-Arneson can be a regular defensive CF in the league. But right now, YS winning the trade thanks to the Vodak contribution.
