9-News: 39.063 – Guerrero Signs Extension

A month after being acquired by the Yellow Springs Nine, and a day after beating Des Moines with a 6-inning, six-hit outing, starting pitcher Juan Guerrero decided he liked Ohio well enough to stick around another season. He and the team came to an agreement that will pay the sidearm pitcher $1.55M next year.

“They wanted to see how I’d do before getting too far along,” Guerrero said. “I guess they were happy.” The veteran is 3-1 since joining the team, but has been sporadic at times, sporting a 4.46 ERA. His delivery makes him very tough on right handed hitters, but subject to break-downs versus lefties, especially lefties with power. He had allowed 20 homers in 17 starts with Vancouver, but has yielded only 4 in six starts with the Nine. Perhaps, however, someone should set the front office down and explain sample size. Guerrero’s HR/9 with the Nine is only 1.0—which is much lower that his 1.4 career total.

That said, he appears to be the kind of guy the team was looking for when they signed Hiroyasu Osaragi—nothing flashy, but a guy who can go out and manage a game. Osaragi seemed to combust after his injury, and is now pitching in the middle east with Jerusalem. The Nine had struggled without a real option after Valle, Ramos, and Colon. Now they seem to have found one.

At soon-to-be 27, Guerrero sports a career record of 55-59, a total that includes a 19-win season in 2035. He broke in with Vancouver as a 21-year-old pitcher, and averaged well over 20o innings a year. It’s a workload that has some wondering if the lanky righthander could be an injury risk, but the team seems unconcerned. Given that the Nine are generally one of the more conservative organizations in the league when it comes to pitcher use and abuse, perhaps that’s a view well-founded. That said, the team said the same thing about Osaragi, who came from a background of some abuse with San Fernando.

Time will tell.

“The team’s offense is a grinding wheel,” said BBA Weekly columnist Gayle Combs. “So you’d think that a guy like Guerrero could make a difference there. As long as he keeps the team in the game, he’s going to pick up his wins.”

The fans can only hope.
