9-News: 38.023 – Saucedo Surgery Successful

Has He Been Pipped?

Beleaguered center fielder Mauro Saucedo’s position was under some intense pressure in the off season, and it didn’t get better when newly acquired Abdeljillil Sediki had a good spring. It got worse when Saucedo suffered a tendon tear in his finger that put him on the DL to start the season, and even worse still when team Dr. Julian Carmona announced Saucedo was not recuperating well and would need surgery to repair the problem.

Last week the medical staff announced that Saucedo, who underwent a successful procedure in early May, is proceeding as expected, and could be back early enough to play some this season. “The tendons have been reattached and the connection point is displaying excellent healing.”

SEDIKI CLAIMING POSITION

Of course, the doctors gave no word as to whether they had reattached Saucedo’s range—something that may be of more use for him in the end given that Sediki seems to have settled in.

The young Keynan has impressed well enough with the bat, hitting .293/.346/.520 with seven homers and 14 steals. But more important, his glove has brought defense to the position that hasn’t been seen in Yellow Springs since Carlos Garcia roamed the area in a platoon role. Given that Sediki is playing fulltime, you can see why pitchers are happy.

“He really goesand get’s ‘em,” said starter Luis Colon. “It’s nice to know we’ve got a guy out there who can do what he’s doing.

TEAM DEFLECTS ISSUE

In the meantime, the Nine’s front office has been evasive on the question of what will happen to Saucedo, choosing merely to praise the outfielder’s contribution in the past and give the tired old saw of being “happy to have this kind of problem.”

Fans, however, are not so inclined. Saucedo has always been a solid offensive player, and could move to left field. But the club has Andy McKinney signed for three seasons over there, and is deep enough in left-handed left fielders to make that move less than likely. “Cut his ass,” one fan said. “Trade him to Loserville,” said another.
