9-News: 39.004 – Ventura Traded to Champs

Move Makes Room in Crowded Bullpen

Lefty bullpen ace Vicente Ventura was dealt to the defending champion Edmonton Jackrabbits today, with the YS9 gang receiving a pair of middle-grade infield prospects in return.

Ventura (28) has been one of the league’s most effective lefthanded specialists over the past four seasons, posting a 2.60 ERA last season. “He’s got the sweeping slider that just makes it so tough on lefty hitters,” said broadcaster/podcaster Melissa Lester. “And you know everyone loves him around here. He’s got great clubhouse presence, so it will be tough to see him leave. I mean, the day he pretended to fall asleep waiting for the bullpen call was brilliant.”

Ventura was made available by the arrival of lefty bullpen man Edgardo Llauro. In addition, there’s apparently some thought that the club might actually retain Jose Chavez as an $11M bullpen guy simply because GM Ron Collins is finding himself undergoing psychic distress every time his staff brings him the papers he needs to sign in order to enact the release. We’re guessing that report is false, but you can never tell with Collins. Lefty Adergazoz Ouakili also remains ready in Indianapolis, and the highly Momcil Djuretic wasn't going anywhere. It all added up to mean Ventura, who faces his last season of team control in 2039, was the odd-man out of a crowded bullpen.

The Nine received 20 year-old second baseman Israel Puente and 21-year-old shortstop Hae-min An in the deal. Both are considered projects in the middle infield, but are guys who can defend and run well. They'll slot somewhere in the middle of the club's prospect lists at their positions.

“That’s a classic YS9 prospect profile at shortstop,” Lester added. “The team has one or two guys like An at every level. It looks to me like Puente is Juan Lopez light, but he’s three years younger, so maybe he’ll get better.”
