YS9 officials announced today that they would be executing their team option to bring Brian Sullivan back to Yellow Springs in 2039, touting the infielder’s versatility and slick glove.

“We’re happy to have Brian back in the Yellow Springs family,” said GM Ron Collins. “He can do a lot of things, and brings a skillset to the team that plugs a lot of holes in ways some people can’t see.” Sullivan played in 133 games last season, starting 78 of them, primarily as a second base platoon against right handed pitching and as a defensive replacement. His .229 batting average wasn’t much more than anyone could have expected, but he hit 10 homers and drove in 42 runs while slugging .399 and OPSing .705. Combined with his glove, Sullivan registered 1.2 WAR in 2038. “Brian’s glove was a key reason our defense improved last year,” Collins added.

Sullivan will make $3.3M in 2039, a total that had some thinking he would be cut loose. “It’s amazing what the ability to stand in the left-handed hitter batter’s box can do to a guy,” said one scout.

The execution of this option combines with the general expectation that Dong-po Thum will be joining the team to cast shadows on the future of Bob Frazier, a slugging 2B who the club is rumored to be willing to part with. He does have options available, though, and could be retained for depth.
