9-News: 38.132 – Nine, Talons Swap Prospects

With the club deep in young corner outfielders, the Yellow Springs Nine announced a deal that will send 21-year-old AA Player of the year Jose Colon to the Phoenix organization in return for young second basemen Blaine Tyler.

Tyler is a 19 year old kid who was drafted from high school in the second round last season, and proceeded to struggle a bit in Traverse City rookie ball, posting only a 70 wRC+. THat said, he’s still considered a solid prospect with a swing that should develop power and enough defensive skills to handle to role. Given the Nine’s lack of depth at the role, he seems like a useful fit. He’ll step into the organization at #1 or #2 on the 2B prospect list.

Colon, however, is coming off an impressive season that saw him destroy AA pitching for 86 games before being jumped to AAA Indianapolis, where he continued the process. The problem, of course is that he’s playing behind what will soon become two Gillstrom Award winners in Andy McKinney (23) and Jose Machado (22), both of whom are left handed. In addition, the club has LHB Anastasio Hernandez available to act as injury insurance (as he did for a week or two this past season). With more big bats coming up behind him, it was best Colon move.

“I’m happy to go somewhere I can play,” Colon said after news of the deal.

This is a very interesting deal for both sides- let's see how it turns out!

This deal saved us about 20 million by allowing us to deny the last two option years for Jean-Luc Lacaze. Looking forward to Colon's left handed power bat in Phoenix. IF he can hit the ground running, could be an outside ROY candidate.

Only thing that stung, however, is that OOTP 20 had re-evaluated Tyler as a 70 rated prospect! But a deal is a deal LOL.

Nothing seemed to change in Tyler's core ratings, so I assume it's more an adjustment in how OOTP deals with overalls. He's back to 65 now, FWIW.
