9-News: 38.129 – Notice Says Chavez to Be Released

Moles in the 9-News staff have reported seeing a confidential email from Yellow Springs Nine GM Ron Collins to owner Bo Jordan that suggests a decision has been made at the top level of the organization to release veteran starter and team icon Jose Chavez. The 36-year-old pitcher returned to the team this year after off-season surgery to repair a tendon on a finger on his throwing hand, and won ten games in a role that was split between starting and the bullpen. His performance, however, had clearly degraded. His lightning-bolt fastball had faded to one that needed sidecar help, and, other than a changeup that still baffled a few guys on the downstream side of the talent pool, BBA hitters had caught up to most of his repertoire. He will turn 37 this December.

The email is rumored to be giving Jordan a head’s up on the opinion of the baseball people on the staff, and allows Jordan to give his input.

Chavez, who has won 172 games for the franchise, has two more seasons at $11.25M remaining on his contract as well as a vesting option for another. It’s a deal that the front office has often said they’d pick up in a heartbeat if Chavez were still able to fill the starter’s role, but it seems that in a meeting held in the executive suit last night it was decided Chavez’s role is limited now to the bullpen—and that this price tag was too much for a reliever.

There is apparently some hope that the club will be able to bring Chavez back under a cheaper deal.

GOOD NEWS FOR CHAVEZ?
The release, assuming it comes, would mean Chavez would be paid his $11.25M salary for both his remaining guaranteed seasons, as well as any additional sums he might get paid as a follow-on deal. So resigning with the Nine (or any other team for that matter) would represent a pay increase for the veteran. The value for the club in releasing Chavez is that the $11.25M would be removed from the team’s salary cap accounting, and instead paid out of their budget overage.

The Nine’s approved budget is currently considerably above the salary cap, which makes the release a safe enough play, though that reduces funds the team might have available to sign future draft picks or perhaps International Free Agents.

Chavez was not available for comment at the time of this deadline.
