9-News: 30.059 – River Monsters Rip Nine
The Twin Cities River Monsters turned suddenly into their namesakes, luring the defenseless YS9 club into Land O’Lakes ballpark like a disguised snapping turtle toying with a school of guppies. The result was just as grisly—a three game sweep that sent the Nine off toward their series in Madison with some serious questions about their situation.
Sure, the team is still 48-38, and still 11 games up in the Heartland division, but three tough losses has to be messing with their heads. This is a team that no one expected to be vying for the best record in baseball, after all. No, instead, most pundits scored this season as a 2037 redux of the 81-ish win variety. And yet, this collection of middle-of-the road Cinderellas had been strutting some pretty serious gas all year.
Now?
Well, let’s see how the kids rebound.
“Every season has ebbs and flows,” saind first-year manager Bill Inkster, who until this streak had been getting some buzz as potential Manager of the Year for his work. “Our guys are working hard every day. But you get adversity and you learn something about your team. I think we’ll be fine as long as we keep ourselves humble and keep doing the work.
On the whole it was a complete collapse from the Nine. A total pasting from its closest division rival. The River Monsters beat the Nine with power (a homer off newly-acquired Elwood Blues to win 4-3), with early offense (5 runs in the first inning off rookie starter Luis Colon, who had been 8-2 prior to that start), and with stifling pitching (Chris Kelly flexed his muscles and went 8.1 innings to win 6-1).
“You guys could go 1-9,” joked Omaha GM Justin Niles to Nine GM Ron Collins during a joint podcast interview last week, suggesting that then they might have something to talk about regarding the division chase. The Nine, having now lost four straight as they head into Madison, seem to be well on their way to achieving that.
Fans at this week’s community outreach luncheon were not happy with that. “You can tell Niles he should keep his mouth shut,” said a Nine fan to Collins. “We don’t need that kind of jinxing.”
