NINE ACQUIRES VETERAN PITCHER

Late-breaking news hits that the Yellow Springs Nine has acquired starting pitcher [urll=V]Elwood Blues[/url] from the Des Moines Kernels in return for $10M and minor league pitcher Jose Rivera.

It’s a deal the Nine needed to make in order to shore up a rotation that was essentially three deep with Carlos Valle, Ernesto Ramos, and Luis Colon the only guys having shown some level of reliability. Blues is owed $5.5M this year and next. He’s 2-4 this season with a 4.82 ERA, but earlier threw a no-hitter against Edmonton. “Elwood is a guy who can really blow some wind.” Said GM Ron Collins. Blues is known to hit 101 on the radar gun. At 31, he brings some additional veteran presence to the young club. Mostly, though, it likely saves the fans from watching additional starts from Han-lee Kim, whose wildness was becoming legendary.

Manager Bill Inkster has been attempting to patch this hole in the Nine roster by using starts from veteran Jose Chavez and quasi-opener Edgardo Llauro in between off-days for most of the year.

OSARAGI RETURN TO SOLIDIFY ROTATION?

The arrival of Blues gives the team four real starters, but the more enticing news is that right-hander Hiroyasu Osaragi is only a week or two from being able to start throwing, and could be back in pitching shape by the All-Star break. Excitement is added by news that the Nine and the 25-year-old pitcher are in negotiations that could extend Osaragi’s currently expiring deal for as many as three seasons. If all this is true, the club could have a true five-man rotation for the first time all year.

“I liked how the club is coming together,” said GM Ron Collins at a recent community outreach luncheon. “We’re trying to be patient with the kids but find the right veterans to take on key roles. Guys like Lucas (McNeiil) and (Jose) Chavez have been brilliant help in making this whole transition work.”

To make room for Blues, 1B Dimiao Laqui was placed on the disabled list with a bruised wrist.

Blues will be at Utopia Field in time for tonight’s game withMontreal.
