“I like to win,” said Robertson when asked why he accepted the arrangement. “I got my money, and the team gets more flexibility to add another guy. Seems like a win-win to me.”
The deal begins in 2039, meaning that Robertson will play the rest of this season on the last of his $500K min-salary deal.
Robertson will turn 23 before the next season begins, but has been with the club for just over two seasons. He’s clubbed 70 doubles, and 62 homers in that span, posting a .279/.363/.527 slash. The team is most excited about the fact that his 2.0 WAR in 2036 jumped to 2.7 in only a few more plate appearances. “We see George as a guy who could be at the top of a lot of our franchise lists before his career is over,” Watson added. “He’s a durable guy, and still a kid, really. He’s going to get better and better. So it’s great for our fans to know he’ll be the organization for four seasons.”
Sam Brewington, the team’s hitting coach, was excited to hear of the deal. “I like working with George. He’s one of those guys who soaks everything in and can take changes from the cage out into the game. He’s also not one to let a slump get him down. He’s just one of my favorites.”
In the meantime, fans are still looking for a pitcher.
