Gonzalez to Try Gainesville Outfield

It was 2035, and the future looked bright for Jose Gonzalez. He was 17 years old, and the Yellow Springs Nine had used their first round pick to select him as a multi-talented two-way kind of star. And that first year, he found himself in rookie league living that dream, pitching 41 innings and posting a nice little 3.07 ERA and hitting .290/.333/.387 in 34 plate appearances. Yes, it was a looking like roses all the way down for Jose Gonzalez.

2036 saw him and the team decide to stick with pitching. He did well in a rookie ball start, but got plastered in limited time upon a promotion. While he could talk a good sample size game, scouts started whispering that his arm wasn’t what they first thought. The speedball maybe wasn’t quite as dependable as they’d like and the slider might not be the nasty bender they’d wanted it to be. And even though his numbers were good in Short-A this year, scouts downgraded his futures on the hill.

Today the club put an apparent end to the Gonzalez as a pitcher exercise, announcing that he would be headed to Gainesville to play the outfield this winter.

“We want to see if Jose can get the swing back,” said assistant GM Phillip Watson. “Jose should be a solid enough defender at the corners, and we think his left-handed bat makes him a future candidate for our big league club.”

Of course, they would have to say that, seeing as this is the front office who expended a valuable pick on him. Most fans, who have finally come to grips with a season that will be bereft of post season losses, look at it and figure it’s another first round bust on the order of the Chris Long fiasco of a few years back.

“This is a front office who can’t draft to spit up their nose,” one fan said on a call-in show.

Truer words may never have been spoken.
