Add Twin Cities to the list of Teams the Nine Cannot Beat. They hosted the boys from Yellow Spring this week, and drilled the Nine three times, running their record against Yellow Springs to 9-3, and putting to rest for all measures any last gasp fancies that Nine fans had at a post season appearance. For fans hoping to see a fighting squad go down in noble efforts, it really wasn’t close. They took the series in straight sets by scores of 10-4, 8-7, 6-3, only the second (coming in a 10-inning affair) being in any serious doubt.
In doing so, they beat the team’s two best pitchers in Ernesto Ramos and Carlos Valle. They held a fairly raucous Nine Offense to just 14 runs in three games.
Discounting the River Monsters, the Nine have had reasonable success against Heartland competition so far, having taken Madison to the mat six times in nine games, defeated Omaha five times to four losses, and also dumping Des Moines five of nine, making the club’s non-River Monster Heartland record 16-11. Not bad, considering that top to bottom, the Heartland is once again able to be considered the best division in baseball. They’ve also been killer to the JL Atlantic, their weak-sister inter-league tandem, having posted a 14-9 record against them).
And yet, that will be no consolation to the faithful, a collection of diehards who is now almost certain to miss seeing the team lose in the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
Sigh.
We at 9-News can’t say that we didn’t see it coming, but the weight of certainty will now make the days darker for some time to come.
