While, at the end of the day, the final analysis of the 2037 season might be that the Nine just could not beat California (0-7) and Edmonton (3-7), the fact of the matter is that it’s been the lower half of the league that has been its chief nemesis. Time and time again, at critical moments, a Des Moines or a Valencia, or, as in the case this week, a Boise baseball club has reached out and thrown a spanner into the works.
The Spuds came rolling into town with the Nine needing at lest three of the four games, and really hoping for a sweep. But the boys from Boise mashed that idea in game one with a resounding 12-2 frying of rookie pitcher Luis Colon. The Nine managed a pair of 1-run victories to rebound, but the Spuds scalloped Yellow Springs 7-4 in the critical fourth game, leaving town with a split and a little piece of the hearts of every Nine fan in the area. Sure, but the numbers there’s a chance their ball team could still make the post season, but any use of brain power revealed the truth. The Nine’s season had been baked.
“We’ve got to stay focused,” said clearly delusion manager Bret Richards, who was clearly trying to hold out for another $1.6M in future salary. “Twin Cities is coming into town and we’ve got to win now.”
Yes, fans, that Twin Cities—that real team, that squad that has a legitimate chance to be the Heartland’s third playoff team—is coming into town to face what is certain to be a demoralized team after Boise took the steam to them. What will happen is no one’s certainty (he says as if we don’t play a week at a time, just ignore that sim behind the curtains!), but my crystal ball says the Nine are finally ripe for a collapse. Expect the River Monsters to feast on the table scraps Boise left behind.
