Last week, the smart money said the Yellow Springs Nine had a 3% chance to make the playoffs (33:1 odds). Today, the new values are out, and those same oddsmakers have egg on their faces, having raised the Nine’s chances to 6.7% (say 15:1). Delusional fans being who they are, are delirious with joy.

“That means that next week, they’ll have to double them again!” said Ken Looper, a drinker at the local bar. “so they’ll be 13%!”

“And then next week they’ll be 26%!” said Maggie Mae Johnson, his sometime friend and equal time drinker. “And the week after that 52%!” She tossed down a whiskey and followed that with a gulp of beer.

“And with that last week, it’ll be 104%!” said Paulie Murphy,” a guy who looked like he’d already gone the Maggie Mae boilermaker a few too many times.

“We’re playoff bound, baby!” Looper said, bringing the argument around again before falling off his chair. He picked himself carefully off the sticky ground, brushed himself off and repositioned himself on his barstool. Then he looked up and blinked. “Have we won it all yet?” he said. Maggie Mae might have winked. “Drinks all round!” Looped screamed, raising his clenched fists in victory. “Drinks all around!”
