9-News: 37.074 – Robertson, Stone Lead Blazing Bats

Three Robertson Homers Clip Hawks

I’m just seeing the ball well right now, DH George Robertson said in an on-field interview after clubbing a historic three homers to lead the Nine to a critical victory in Omaha, and right before teammates gave him a pie in the face. Truer words haven’t been spoken. It’s the first time a YS9 hitter turned the trick since Victor Guerra turned the trick in July of 2033. To find another case you’d have to go back four more seasons to the unlikely occurrence of Abramo Ghezzi’s very lucky day in 2029.

The first two were opposite field shots off starter Stephen Clulow, the last a laser beam down the right field line of reliever Ken Spencer. Robertson’s speaking truth when he says he’s seeing the ball well, as he’s on a bit of a hot streak that’s seen him gather three multi-hit games in his last six, and 4 in his last nine. Since early July, he’s raised his batting average 23 points and his OBP nearly 40. “It’s good to be hitting well again,” he said. “Nothing’s worse than hitting a streak where things just aren’t really working.

STONE COMFORTABLE AGAIN

Also breathing easier these days is catcher Aaron Stone, who got off to an espically bad start, but who has bounced back and is sitting at .275/.358/.512, with 19 homers—numbers that look a whole lot more like what was expected of him when the year started.

The two combined (let’s not spend much time on the resurgence that Lucas McNeill is beginning to have, best to not jinx anything). The two (Robertson and Stone) are the hottest bats on the team right now, and are Thing 1 and Thing 2 when it comes to reasons the Nine offense is still #2 in the leagues in slugging and #3 in on base percentage. The Nine lead the Frick in extra base hits.

“We can score runs,” said Stone. “So we figure we’re never really out of any game.”
