The Yellow Spring Nine made controversial news earlier this season, selecting 19-year-old Brazilian Renato Lacerda, a kid who most people said would never sign to play professional baseball. Today, the team announced all those fears were well-founded, and that the right-hander has decided to forego becoming a multi-millionaire to attend college or high school, or where-ever he’s going to go in order to learn how to make money.
“Renato’s agents came in high,” said YS9 GM Ron Collins of rumors that the kid wanted $4.6M. “Let’s just say we were higher.”
Insiders report that the Nine offered Lacerda double his request, which per our math suggests a package that went upward of $9.2M. No word on exactly why the talented teen-ager rejected the offer, but negotiations have apparently broken so far as to be irretrievable. Some are noting that the team’s legal staff is chartering investigators to look into the whereabouts of Wichita GM Genius Hopkins, who has been known to be active in Brazil before. Whether tampering allegations will be filed is uncertain, but the investigators are said to be having a grand time trying to dig into Genius’s exploits.
In the meantime, Lacerda will return to school, and the club will decide if any of their other youthful selections would benefit from a little extra spending cash.
