9-News: 37.019 – Nine Lose Torres, Davidson

Opening day cuts cost the Nine two players today, and the Boise Spuds claimed shortstop Joaquin Torres and the Charm City Jimmies claimed pitcher Larry Davidson, bit who had been placed on waivers for the purposes of taking them off the YS9 40-man roster.

Torres (24), who came to the nine in a Rule 5 trade with Las Vegas two seasons ago, played in 58 games for the Nine, primarily as a defensive substitute. He hit only .151 in 91 plate appearances last year, and with the development of other infielders in the organization, wasn’t expected to see much more playing time at the parent club.

Davidson (23) is more of an enigma and possible loss. The team had been working him as a starter for much of his time with the organization, which began when he was acquired in trade with Phoenix. He’d shown reasonable success at A-ball and AA, but most in the organization suggested his future was as a reliever. One assumes Charm City will utilize him as such, though time will tell. The Nine left him unprotected due to a bit of a glut of younger talent in the bullpen, and a need to find space on that 40-man for many of the rookies they have in the big-leagues now.

“We’ll miss both players,” said assistant GM Phillip Watson.

Davidson looks to be a solid ROOGY, but YS seems to have plenty of bullpen arms as it is.

I was hoping his 2 changeup would pop, but alas...

It would be nice, huh? But it's a lot to expect when even the guys with high POT changeups can't figure them out.
