9-News: 37.017 – Newcomer Garcia Tagged FL POW

Playing in the shadow of a potential Hall of Famer can bring a certain sense of anonymity to a guy. Jose Garcia understands that. The fact that he’s only 21 can make it easy to get lost, too. But it’s important to remember that the reason some folks think it might be okay to move McNeill back to second for a trial is that the 6’2” 200 pounder has wielded a pretty interesting bat over the past year or so.

So, while a lot of people have either downplayed or flat over-looked Yellow Springs “other first baseman,” it’s not a surprise to a few that the kid from Monte Critsi threw down a .471/.591/.882 line that came with a double and a pair of homers—good enough to be named the Frick League’s Player of the Week for the first week of the season.

“It feels great, of course, Garcia said. “For a long time it seemed like no one thought I could do something like this. But I just thank God and the powers that made me, and I try to keep respecting the game. Whatever comes will come.”

McNeill will be nursing a sprained ankle for another week.

In the mentime, Garcia is prepping to face San Fernando’s Feliciano Rafael, one of the league’s toughest pitchers. “It’s an honor to try him out,” Garcia said.

wow, and I thought Michael Best (.522/.542/.870, 2 HR, 7 RBI) had a great week.

To be honest, our own Rob Thomas seemed to have a better week than Garcia...two doubles, a homer, and a .563/.579/.875 line. Shrug. Garcia's two homers did come on the same day, though, so maybe that skews it a little.
