9-News: 37.010 – BBA Teams Thwart YS9 Future Domination Scheme

Front Office Apparently Blind to The Fact That Other Teams Have Money

The annual BBA cash blow-out known as the International Free Agency period has come and gone, with Yellow Springs dropping a relatively quite $5M ($9M after taxes) into the drink to acquire RHB first baseman Robert Chenowith, certainly a pleasant gentleman from Derby, England. It isn’t the first time they’ve spent that kind of cash on a kid who can barely drive, and we’re sure it won’t be the last.

What is more fascinating here is that 9-News has obtained secret emails and scouting documents from the club that suggest the plan had been to spend even more. “We may not have it next year, so we should dump all our money now,” noted assistant GM Phillip Watson, a comment that suggests the club is seeing financial difficulty in the near future. “Yes,” GM Ron Collins replies, “Bo will want his cut.”

The Nine has been a highly profitable venture for the past decade, and some say that current owner and Hall of Fame member Bo Jordan has been using cash from the club to leverage several other business opportunities. Others have suggested that Jordan might also be stockpiling cash in anticipation of a run at the US Presidency in 2038.

Regardless of the background, these documents made it clear that the team was attempting to dump another $25M in the IFA process, $50M when taxes were added. The additional offers were to be made to a pair of candidates (one for $15M, the other for $10), and it was clear that club officials were counting their chickens before they hatched. Our moles inside the Nine’s International Complex have photos of lockers that already carried the names of Bing-de Zhou and Alexander Julyan, a pair of youthful outfielders who can really hit.

Imagine their surprise when Zhou, from China, signed with Rockville for $16M, and Julyan, from Jamaica, went to Seattle for an eye-popping $22M (both figured prior to taxes).

An anonymous member of the staff was forthright in putting a finger on the problem. “It was a rock-solid plan," he said. "We were going to have these three super-stars in the future. Everyone was toasting each other and slapping ourselves on the back. The caviar was running deep, and none of us even like that shit. But we didn’t account for the idea that other teams had money, too.”
