9-News: 37.002 – McNeill Wants $50M?
Star Looking for Revenge?
Are shenanigans the YS9 front office pulled back in the early days of Lucas McNeill’s career coming back to bite them? It sure looks like it.
Much has been written about those controversial times, some supportive of the team and some not so much. But the historical record stands to show that McNeill, who made $9M for this year’s Sawyer Silk winning season (, has clearly had his revenue stream depressed by front office acrobatics designed to control his contract.
Only recently has McNeill made much of a fuss about it, with some suggesting that his pop-star wife, British singer Mikki Manning, was the major impetus—using her business wiles created in the dog-eat-dog world of the entertainment industry to drive his approach to getting his true worth. “We all know Lucas is making half what he’s worth on the market,” she said earlier this year after her star husband had his play reduced in a losing All-Star game. Insiders at that time said that it would be interesting to watch negotiations between McNeill and the team, and that idea got a boost when Jacksonville’s David Noboru got a 6-season deal at essentially $26M per.
Now comes grapevine whispers says last-ditch negotiations have broken off after McNeill’s rep asked for $50M. And, no, if this report is right, that’s not $50M in overall value, but instead is $50M/year for five seasons.
Take that you selfish sonsabitches.
Documents leaked from the negotiations support the veracity of the request [ed- see bellow], but other indicators are the McNeill negotiation team high-fiving as they left the Nine’s front office, and Manning’s social media blowing up after she posted “payable in diamonds, gold, and silk, baby,” a post some are saying is made in reference to the Zimmers, Pucketts, and Silks her husband has won during his time with the Nine.
We’re not sure when the last time the BBA had a reining Sawyer Silk winner in the free agency pool, but it looks like it’s all but certain now.

Holy shit. This would be the equivalent of an MLB player asking for 90 mil per year

This was after what I think was a pretty generous counter-offer, but one something lower than the Morales/Noboru level. Again...I figure it's basically the game's way of saying "see you in FA."

We've talked about this at length before, but I always forget (I think because we don't really know the answer). Are contract asks correlated to league revenues? I also know there's some internal settings for typical "insert level of player" salaries, but don't know how much influence those have.
If asking prices are tied to revenues, then there's an argument to be made for adjusting the cap based on revenue (which has been going up, right). But that would probably mean more revenue sharing as well, to keep the playing field even.

He started at $32M but apparently got mad after I told he wasn't worth as much as a couple of the other contracts. If I'm right, I would expect that number to fall fairly quickly in the FA process, but we'll find out.

If it's 50 million when FA opens though, the entire "This is what I say when I mean that I want to go to FA" argument loses a little strength.

Re: 9-News: 37.002 – McNeill Wants $50M?
It would lose some strength, though it probably depends on exactly how quickly the demands drop and to where.
Don't get me wrong, I tend to agree with the idea that the game should do things differently. It's a little annoying that you can't get a full flavor of what the players are doing. But if the results are better for the league overall, I'm fine with it for the short term.
We'll see what actually happens though.
