9-News: 36.053 – Camacho Injury Creates Dissension

Blame Cast on Richards

“I’m not an outfielder,” Carlos Camacho said after learning that elbow tendinitis will sideline him for as many as five weeks. Camacho then went on a profanity-laced tirade that blasted bench coach Simon Wright for suggesting Camacho play the outfield and Bret Richards for agreeing with him. “That’s not a throw I make a lot,” Camacho said. “I’m sure that’s what created this whole thing.”

Camacho has been playing right field for the past week or so, and had been on a three-game hitting streak that had seen him club a pair of doubles, a triple, and a homer. He had to come out of a game after uncorking a long throw home in an attempt to gun down Hawaii Tropic runner Brenton Allen.

“Carlos is really frustrated,” Richards said of the outburst. “I understand it. I don’t think he did the right thing—especially tearing into Simon like that. This is my choice. Simon didn’t have anything to do with it. He makes a lot of suggestions, and some I take. But, you know, guys will be guys. Carlos was pretty happy to be playing all the way up until he got hurt.”

Camacho is a well-regarded defender whose bat has been traditionally streaky. He had been a solid step up in the field during his stint in right. In his place, Carlos Garcia—who has had his own issues with the Nine’s front office--started the rest of the week. Garcia has always been a devastating weapon against left handed pitching but is not the answer against right-handers, so the team is likely to make some kind of move to cover this hole for the short term.

BRAKE UPDATE

Camacho joins first baseman Dave Brake on the disabled list. Brake’s issue was a partially torn MCL, which was thought to have been healed by now. Team doctors, however, have noted that he’s still not ready and have been reluctant to give a new deadline.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can,” Brake said recently.

He’s spending time in the team’s clubhouse and training facilities, but has not been cleared to put torque on the joint.

Camacho is the most frustrating player I've ever had in an OOTP game. He looks like he could be a 4-5 WAR player but consistently plays like a big heaping pile of doo-doo. I'm convinced that every single one of his ratings are the absolute lowest they could be in order to be rounded up. So he is essentially a 5/7/6/5/5 player with 6/10/4/9 infield ratings and 7/10/7 OF.

He's been very good for us defensively. Slight + most everywhere. And to give him his props, he's hitting LHP just like we wanted (144 OPS+). His numbers issue is that our injury to Miguel Padilla has been pressed us into hitting him against RHP way more than we wanted. Otherwise, his numbers would be a lot better. So that part really isn't his fault. He's been a very good RHB platoon guy.

We need an award given to that player. The player that looks like he should be great but consistently underachieves....

We shall call it.... The Drew Zod Award!
