9-News: 36.037 – Chavez Becomes Franchise Win King

The score against Calgary was 7-1 after seven innings when Jose Chavez left the game, so there were still a few minutes of uncertainty. But reliever Tim Oliver brought the win home, meaning Jose Chavez had registered 146 on his career—which meant he officially passed David Kloop’s 145, and now held the Yellow Springs franchise record.

His teammates popped champagne and beers, and celebrated with him in the clubhouse afterward.

“It was a great night,” Chavez said. “I’m grateful that the guys got me a lot of runs early, so that made it easier.”

“He was really sharp tonight, said catcher Aaron Stone. Really easy to catch. It was fun to say I was there.”

The hard-throwing lefty struck out 7 in those 7 innings, walking only one. The lone run came on a solo homer from Francisco Marin. “It’s fun to think about,” Chavez said of the record. “It’s a great honor. I never thought I’d get this far. Of course, we all know I’m just keeping the seat warm for that other guy,” he added with a smile.

That other guy is Lawrence Columbus LaLoosh, who is two years younger than Chavez, and who is expected to also pass up Klopp later this season. But tonight was all about Jose Chavez, and his teammates weren’t letting him forget it. He returned to the locker room to find they had painted a "146" onto his locker, and written "only 54 more to 200, old man!" on the chalk board. At 34, Chavez's shot at 200 wins isn't bad, especially since he's in the first season of a five year extension (six, if that fifth season vests). Some suggest that if the Nine continues to be a true competitor, 250 isn't completely out of the question--though admittedly, that would be tough.

"Don't rule him out," manager Bret Richards said. Baseball's a weird game.

he'd better celebrate and enjoy that while he can, because there's another pitcher ready to Crash that party before long.
