9-Notes: 20.039 - Down By the Ohio River

Post by RonCo » Tue Dec 20, 2016 11:17 pm

YS9 GM Ron Collins gets out of the car. It’s late at night. The car is parked under a bridge named for George Rogers Clark, a local hero of some sort, it seems. Not that anyone else would care. He slams the door shut, and leans against the side door, the dying headlights fading into the darkness. To the north, the Ohio River rolls along. The river smells dead—like most everything else here. New Albany reflects in the ridges of the current.

A moment later another car rolls up, tires crunching in the gravel. Two men get out, one a lanky white guy, the other a little shorter and clearly of Dominican background. They walk to stand in front of Collins.

“Helluva job out there tonight boys,” the Nine GM says.

“You got the dough?”

“You got the goods?” Collins says.

The white guy hands Collins a towel. Collins hands them each an envelope.

“This money’s for the towel, right? Nothing else,” Collins says, using it to wipe some of the god-awful humidity off his face. Louisville is a great town in a lot of ways. Cardinal Basketball is awesome, anyway, and the football team is top-notch. But the Sluggers are like God’s punishment to Kentucky for voting Republican last election. And every other one, too.

“It’s an expensive towel,” says the Dominican, smiling.

“Don’t spend it all in one place,” Collins said. “And remember there’s more where that came from if you can manage to bring me more … uh … towels.”

All three laugh. Then the two get back into the car they came in, and drove off.

Collins smirks. It was good to see Mario and Josh again, even if it was just for a moment. Second time tonight. The first, of course was at Louisville’s Waterfront Stadium and the game his Nine won handily 7-0 over the Sluggers after Gonzalez gave up 5 runs in his six innings. McDowell, also from the Yellow Springs organization, followed him up by allowing a pair of homers. Nice touch, Collins thought. Genius fell right into their trap, selling his mother and three month’s rent at the Trump Towers to add Gonzalez to the Sluggers, then “stealing” McDowell from the Nine in the Rule 5 draft. He wondered how long it would be until Genius sent McDowell back. He shrugged. Wouldn’t matter. The Nine were winners either way.

Collins loved playing games of intellect against teams that had none. He opened the car door and got in, tossing the $100K towel into the passenger seat.

One towel, one win, he thought.

And tomorrow is another night.
