After hearing the results of the MBWBA's annual Rule 6 draft, Nine fans are suddenly salivating at the idea of an outfield that pairs 22-year-old superstar Luis Bacca with 23-year-old slugger Alfredo "Savage" Salazar. The team made Salazar, who has been a star for the Brussels organization, the first pick in the process by which EBA stars find their way to the grandest stage in all of baseball.
Salazar (8/7/9/7/7) slashed .309/.392/.575 on his way to hitting 43 homers and driving in 125 runs this summer. He's hit 161 long balls in just over four seasons with the Eagles, leading the league in runs and RBI at one time or another. If you're a fan of advanced stats, he's had them, too--try 7.1 and 7.4 WAR the past two seasons. He combines that kind of power with 45 steal speed.

The selection gives the Nine final bidding rights to the young slugger, which means that one Salazar agrees to a contract, the club has the right to match it. General Manager RonCo was flushed as he left the draft process. "The entire Yellow Springs front office is obviously excited about the idea of adding Alfredo to the roster, but there's a long way to go here. I think we'll hear from a few other GMs before this is all said and done."
Despite RonCo's warnings, a few others around town aren't quite so restrained.
"I know everyone says we shouldn't get too excited yet," said Kashmir Marooney, the owner of Kashmir's Hoagies, a sandwich shop down the street from Chavez Memorial. "It's possible someone will pay so much that even Little can't afford the guy, but we're already getting a "Savage Dog" recipe onto to the menu...just in case."
