"We are thankful for all that Barney did for the community in his time here," said GM Rob McMonigal, "but unfortunately, things weren't working on the ballfield. Lindsay and I talked about it, and after failing a few times to get anyone interested in having his veteran leadership for the stretch run, decided it would be better to go ahead and co-announce his departure now rather than wait for the end of the season. That enabled us to ensure we had room on the 40-man roster to try some other players. He's been a class act from start to finish."
"Let's face it, I let the team and my fans down," said Lindsay. "This was the worst year of my professional career. I just could not not get anything going. I really appreciate all the ways in which the Nine tried to help me. They gave me plenty of chances. But I don't have the speed I used to on my pitches. It's just a fact. I can read a radar gun as well as the next guy. I hate going out like this, but it could be the end of the line."
The season wasn't all bad. Lindsay got his 3,000th strikeout earlier in the year. He was still effective against lefties, with a positive WAR and a 4.19 ERA against southpaws. He was a Player of the Game on April 29th and had 4 games where he started and gave up 2 runs or less.
"I'll never forget how much this team celebrated my 3,000th strike out," said Lindsay. "They did it right for me, even though I wasn't pitching great and I got most of those Ks in a Nashville uniform. That's class, right there."
Lindsay potentially ends what is likely a Hall of Fame career with 254 wins, 3014 strikeouts, and a career WAR of 68.9.
