YS9 Ace Dominates Kernels

June 6, 2044: Yellow Springs – Carlos Valle went 8 innings of two-hit ball, striking out 12 Des Moines hitters and walking none on his way to his tenth victory. “That was maybe as sharp as I’ve ever seen him,” said catcher Bruce McKinley. To give you an idea of what that means, remember that McKinley also caught Valle’s No-hitter a few weeks ago.

Since that time, he’s maintained—and is even on a streak the past three outings, allowing only 1 run in his past three starts, a span of 22 innings.

Manager Sam Brewington played it a little more coyly, noting that the year, 2044, was an even numbered year, “and we all know what that means.

Valle won the first of his two Nebraska awards in 2040, and the other in 2042.

On the whole of the year, Valle’s numbers are hard to argue with. His 10-1 record represents the highest win count in baseball. His 2.22 ERA and his 54 FIP- is a career best and the best of the three Frick League starters who would currently be considered the strongest candidates: Valle, Long Beach’s Danya Tchekanov, and Louisville’s James Browning. Arguably, Surfer reliever Cornelio Lozano could be in the mix, too, though there is some question whether he will qualify or hold onto his performance. Valle’s 3.5 WAR is best of all of them.

There’s a lot of baseball to play, but one suspects things could get interesting in Yellow Springs as time moves on.

I’m having a good time with it,” Valle said. “And it’s being made even better because of what Ernesto (Ramos, 8-2, 2.90) Tomas (Ramirez, 6-2, 3.08), and Dave (Lee, 7-2, 3.32) are doing. It’s a lot of fun when we’re all trying to one-up each other every outing.” Add in Josh Henson (5-2, 3.30) as the most usual fifth starter now that Carlos Pineda is again out all year, and you’ve got a helluva solid rotation. Still, the cream rises, and Carlos Valle has been the cream. So to speak.
