Left Siders to shift Right?

November 12, 2042: Yellow Springs – At 25 years old, Dong-po Thum appeared in his third All-Star game this year. He also took his team to the post season (with the inevitable result). Today, for the third straight season he was named the Frick League Zimmer Diamond Glove winner. For the second straight season he took the Charles Puckett golden Bat Award at third base. This double-double would be solid in itself, but he also finished 3rd in the Sawyer Silk voting for the third time in a year, completing an odd triple-double that seems to sum up his persona.

“If you vote for the best hitter it would be (Semei) Kwakou,” said Nine GM Ron Collins in an interview earlier this year.” But if you’re voting for the best player it would be Dong-po Thum—or maybe (Louisville’s) Theo Bourges.”

Bourges (9.4 WAR) won the award this year, Kwakou (7.9 WAR) second, Thum (9.0) third.

Thum: “I’m Happy”

When asked his opinion of the voting, Thum shrugged and smiled. “I’m happy,” he said.

The extremely popular third baseman made $8.1M this year, and signed an $11.8M deal to avoid arbitration this off season. He said that rather then travel home to visit his family in China this off-season, he’s going to stay in Yellow Springs this winter to work on his physical well being. At 6’4” and an athletic 195 pounds, he’s been a durable young player for the Nine, having appeared in more than 157 games each year. Rumors that he might shift to second base do seem to have some merit, though, and Thum admits that he’s feeling a need to work on his footwork at the pivot.

“That’s the only thing that was a little hard to get a feel for last year,” he said. “Seeing the bat off the ball came along, but there’s a certain sense of danger you have to live with to stand there and wait for the double play relay. I think that comes from muscle memory.”

The conversation has some wondering if that shift might see Thum win the Zimmer at second in 2043, and then shift to shortstop to win it in 2044.

Yes, that would be a pretty interesting triple crown now, don’t you think?

Ulterior Motive To Stay in Town?

It is noteworthy though, to think that his decision to stay in the States in the off-season might also be motivated by the presence of Pulitzer Prize winning and best-selling author Jun-Li Wan, with whom he was seen having dinner while the club was in Sacramento during the post season. Wan later stopped in to Yellow Springs while on a tour for her new book Fresh Beginnings, which is a look at China's global position in the past ten years, and how it might change in the next. Thum was seen at a book signing, but ducked away when fans recognized him.

So, yeah, time to work on the old footwork, it seems.

One wonders if she'll have him shave the mustache or not.

I’m not sure he could win it at SS. Good stats for sure but not sure he’s diamond worth there.

Thum is a beast for sure regardless of which position he fields.
