9-News: 42.028 – Finch Shipped to Indy
Veteran on Last Go-around?
Fools’ Gulch – Walter Finch was hoping he’d turned a corner after last year. He’d just hit .291 and put up almost a whole WAR in only 168 plate appearances. At 31, perhaps he’d turned what was once a compelling career back around. Maybe he’d righted the ship. His glove was good, after all. He could play anywhere in the outfield, and in this day of enhanced focus on defense, that had to be good for something.
But Seattle's GM @njherdfan didn’t keep him around, and when he finally got a deal in the off-season it was with Yellow Springs, and for only a minor league arrangement that would turn him into a free agent if the team didn’t bring him up 30 days after the season started.
Today he got a ticket to Indianapolis, the team’s AAA club, which starts that ticker.
“That’s what happens when you crap the bed,” Finch said, obviously disappointed. He appeared in 24 game this spring and made 32 plate appearances, but hit only .188, striking out 13 times and walking only four. “I don’t blame them a bit. I wasn't very good out there. And when they announced Grant (Lee) was coming, I figured I knew where things were going.” Lee, like Finch, is a right-handed batter who the team will likely play against lefties and as s defensive replacement—a role Finch was set on.
So, while the clock begins to tick in the way that these things do in professional sports, Walter Finch begins to assess his options. If he’s eventually released, will he try to pick up with another team? Maybe go to the Middle East? Or, just call it a day and find something else to do besides drive his wife crazy?
Everything is possible. Everything on the table.
But for now Walter Finch plans to go to Indianapolis and keep working hard. “The dream doesn’t die easy, you know? Baseball is a weird business. Anything can happen if you let it.”

He's actually put together an ok career for a player of modest talent, at best.

I enjoyed his early career in Seattle, but I definitely couldn't justify keeping him around
